Border Policies, Securitization and Migrant Health

The primary aim of our activities related to Border Policies, Securitization, and Migrant Health is to establish an entry point for public health science into the field of border control and facilitate contributions to policy formulation processes in that arena. By doing so, the research ventures to provide the evidence for policies benefitting the health and wellbeing of migrants crossing borders.

The activities are embedded in the Border Security, Detention and Health Group of the Lancet Migration European Hub and comprise the following three research streams:

  1. A series of systematic reviews to compile and synthetize the existing evidence around securitization, externalization and privatization of border control and its potential effect on the health of refugees and asylum seekers.
  2. Case studies of selected countries within Europe and other regions are set along a mapping of private actors/agencies to explore and describe the corporate actors in border control.
  3. Qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews among different actors on the powers involved in policy making and the type of interactions and interdependence existing among all stakeholders.
